Anthropic leaders join petition seeking tools to pace frontier AI development
Anthropic backed a July 2026 petition asking the U.S. government to support an international effort to develop tools for deliberately pacing frontier AI development.
Pacing the Frontier
What happened
TechCrunch reported on July 28 that Anthropic supported a petition circulated by employees at frontier AI labs. The petition asks the U.S. government to support an international effort to develop technical and governance tools for pacing automated frontier-AI development.
The petition’s public signatory list includes Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei and co-founders Jared Kaplan, Jack Clark, Chris Olah, and Benjamin Mann. The live page displayed 1,386 employee signatories when accessed on September 14.
The petition requests development of possible pacing mechanisms. It does not establish a binding rule, an immediate slowdown, enforcement powers, or an international agreement.
Why it matters
The event shows support from prominent leaders at a frontier AI developer for preparing mechanisms that could slow development under unspecified conditions. In separate company-hosted analysis, Anthropic has argued that the world should have a verifiable option to slow or temporarily pause frontier AI development so societal structures and alignment research can keep pace. Alignment research seeks ways to make AI systems reliably pursue intended goals.
What remains unclear
- The petition does not specify what would trigger pacing, who would decide, how compliance would be verified, or which legal authority would apply.
- The displayed signatory total is a live website count and may not represent the total at the time of the July announcement.
- Individual signatures do not by themselves establish a binding corporate policy.
