MIT students test AI copilots in a jet-engine design challenge
MIT reported that undergraduates used AI copilots—software assistants that help with tasks—during a four-week challenge to design, fabricate, assemble, and test small gas-turbine aero engines.

What happened
MIT reported that its JARVIS Challenge involved 31 students in seven teams, with four weeks for the design–build–test project. A pre-event MIT calendar listing described the planned program, but does not document completed results.
According to MIT News, the challenge target was a single-spool engine producing 50–100 pounds of thrust and completing five 60-second runs on Jet-A fuel. These were design objectives, not independently verified performance results.
MIT reported that teams used AI for textbook summaries, software learning, vendor sourcing, spreadsheets, references, and design comparisons. Participants also reported hallucinations, sycophancy, and limited physical understanding during detailed design and prototyping.
Why it matters
The challenge is a small educational example of where participants reported AI could assist engineering workflow and where they still found human judgment necessary. It does not show that AI independently built an engine, was safe for aerospace use, or can generally speed aerospace development.
What remains unclear
- The completed-engine account comes from MIT’s reporting on an MIT-run program. The reviewed sources contain no independent public test report, thrust measurements, instrumentation data, prompt logs, model-by-model results, or external safety assessment.
- The separate news follow-up largely follows MIT’s account and does not independently document engineering performance. The reviewed sources also report no control group, prespecified outcome measures, or formal evaluation protocol, so they cannot establish a general productivity or safety result for AI engineering copilots.
